Orvis: Hey I'm Orvis and I'm interested in the media's depiction surrounding gender, conventions of gender and stereotypes in general. It get's me so mad that it is completely acceptable that girls can wear pants, while boys would be teased silly for sporting a dress. There are also certain types of pants that would be cool for boys to wear, but will not be regarded as fashionable on a gal.
Boys who wear dresses are symbolically associated with homosexuality, transexuality, its halloween and/or they're pretending to be a girl. As a social norm dresses are associated with girls. As for boy who sports a dress being teased silly... a stroll along Church St, would probably prove otherwise. It symbolizes femininity, without these symbols, language, culture and such won't work. As for fashion, blame runway, media, Tom Cruise ("stars") and the general populance for accepting it. ps. I've been snapped at many times by Scotts, kilts aren't the same as dresses.
